Arterial and Ischemic Wound Care

When blood flow to the lower legs and feet is reduced, wounds can struggle to heal and complication risk rises — these wounds often need coordinated vascular evaluation.

Why arterial wounds are different

Arterial, or ischemic, wounds occur when reduced blood flow limits the oxygen and nutrients tissue needs to heal. These wounds can be more fragile and slower to respond to standard wound care alone.

How PWS approaches arterial wounds

Our team evaluates circulation as part of the overall wound assessment and coordinates with vascular specialists when further evaluation, imaging, or intervention may help improve blood flow alongside local wound care.

What to watch for

Wounds on the feet or lower legs that are painful, discolored, cool to the touch, or not improving should be evaluated for a circulation-related cause.

Seek emergency care immediately for rapidly spreading infection, fever, confusion, severe pain, black tissue, or any concern for sepsis. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
