Surgical Wound Care and Post-Operative Monitoring

Some surgical wounds need additional monitoring, dressing management, or debridement beyond what a typical post-op visit provides.

Why surgical wounds need extra attention

Most surgical incisions heal as expected, but some — due to infection risk, underlying health conditions, wound complexity, or delayed healing — need closer, more frequent monitoring than a standard follow-up schedule allows, especially for patients who cannot easily return to the surgeon's office.

How PWS approaches surgical wounds

We coordinate directly with the surgeon or treating team, monitor for infection or dehiscence, manage dressings, perform debridement when appropriate, and communicate findings back to the surgical team so the overall plan of care stays aligned.

What to watch for

Increasing redness, swelling, drainage, separation of the incision, fever, or worsening pain after surgery should be evaluated right away.

Seek emergency care immediately for rapidly spreading infection, fever, confusion, severe pain, black tissue, or any concern for sepsis. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
