Traumatic Wound Care

Trauma-related wounds vary widely in depth, contamination risk, and complexity, and treatment is guided by the specifics of the injury and the patient's overall health.

Why traumatic wounds vary so much

Wounds from falls, lacerations, abrasions, or other injuries can involve tissue loss, contamination, infection risk, swelling, and sometimes exposed deeper structures. The right treatment depends heavily on depth, location, circulation, and the patient's overall health.

How PWS approaches traumatic wounds

Our clinicians assess the wound thoroughly, clean and dress it appropriately, monitor closely for infection, and coordinate with emergency, surgical, or specialist providers when a wound requires a higher level of care than can be managed in the home or facility setting.

What to watch for

Uncontrolled bleeding, exposed bone or tendon, spreading infection, or numbness near the wound need urgent evaluation — call 911 or go to the emergency room for severe trauma.

Seek emergency care immediately for rapidly spreading infection, fever, confusion, severe pain, black tissue, or any concern for sepsis. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
